METAS’s research and development activities focus on improving and expanding the services on offer. In addition, METAS researchers are actively involved in individual projects of basic research, thereby contributing to the ongoing development of the International System of Units (SI).
European Partnership on Metrology (EPM)
METAS conducts its research and development to a large extent within the framework of European metrology research programmes. The European Association of National Metrology Institutes (EURAMET) and the European commission have jointly developed the "European Partnership on Metrology" EPM as a successor programme of the “European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research” (EMPIR). The goal of these programmes is to improve the international coordination of research conducted by the national metrology institutes and to strengthen their collaboration
The programme budget amounts to around €700 million and is co-financed by the member states. Switzerland has been a full member of the European Partnership on Metrology since 10 November 2025.
METAS and the designated institutes PMOF/WRC and CHUV/IRA are involved in over 35 projects. Swiss universities, colleges, research institutes and companies can also participate as external project partners and receive some of the funding.
