Personnel news at fedpol

Simon Spörri has been named deputy director of fedpol. The Federal Council acknowledged the nomination at its meeting on 13 August. Simon Spörri will take up his new role on 1 September 2025 and will continue to lead the International Police Cooperation division at fedpol.

A glimpse behind the scenes of an international conference

Delegations from around the world traveled to Geneva from July 28 to 31 to take part in the sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union. Preparations for this event began several weeks ago for fedpol. Our teams were responsible for assessing the threat, advising delegations receiving protection, and ordering the necessary police measures. The cantonal police corps then carried out the protection measures, in coordination with the Diplomatic Security Brigade and the relevant United Nations services. This well-oiled organization depended on effective cooperation between many partners.

Joint press release from fedpol and the Office of the Attorney General

Switzerland has been the target of several cyberattacks since June 2023, including during the World Economic Forum in Davos, the Summit on Peace in Ukraine in Bürgenstock in June 2024, and the Eurovision Song Contest in 2025. The pro-Russian group “NoName057(16)” has claimed responsibility for these attacks. More than 200 Swiss websites were affected, many of them belonging to authorities and operators of critical infrastructure. Thanks to a coordinated international investigation, to which fedpol and the Office of the Attorney General contributed significantly, three key figures in the group were identified and international arrest warrants were issued for them.

Development of the first Swiss biometric identity card

Together with its partners in the cantons and at the federal level, fedpol is currently working on the development of the first biometric Swiss biometric identity card. Like the biometric Swiss passport, this identity card will be equipped with a chip containing biometric data. This will provide enhanced protection against misuse. The introduction is planned for the end of 2026. A non-biometric identity card will continue to be available and may be used within Switzerland.
