Over the years, SEM has worked with the IOM and the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) to develop return programmes for specific countries. These return assistance programs have implemented measures tailored to the target groups and the situation in the countries of origin.
The first assisted return programmes enabled the return of asylum seekers in the aftermath of the two major crises in Bosnia (10,000 returns) and Kosovo (40,000 returns). Other programmes followed, for specific durations.
